What is Young Writers' StorySchool?

StorySchool is 24×3-minute videos with activity sheets and teachers’ notes to supercharge the writing process in the classroom or, for keen young writers, at home. Each video covers an aspect of the writing process, shows how author Tristan Bancks does it, using pictures, video, music, maps and other tools to bring the process to life, and then sets a challenge for the young writer. It is a system for encouraging more authentic, personal and detailed writing that young people care about and teachers love to read.
The StorySchool method is an active, outdoor, visual, aural, tech-infused writing adventure. It’s about seeing, hearing and feeling a piece of writing, making it personal. It’s an approach proven by Tristan in the writing of his award-winning books and by the tens of thousands of students who have taken his workshops since 2008.

Course Content

The Young Writers' StorySchool course is delivered in three segments: Hatch, Run and Soar.
  • Hatch gives young writers a flying start on brainstorming and generating story ideas.
  • Run focuses on writing and drafting and introduces new ways to think about the writing process.
  • Soar takes young writers to the next level, offering advanced techniques for rewriting and editing.

Tristan Bancks tells stories for page and screen. His books for kids and teens include Two Wolves, The Fall,  Detention, the Tom Weekly series and Nit Boy. Two Wolves won Honour Book in the 2015 Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards and was shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards. It also won the YABBA and KOALA Children’s Choice Awards, as did The Fall and Detention. Detention is about a daring escape from an immigration detention centre and a lockdown in a school.
